Pro Tip: Unless you're paid bonuses or commission, only do what you're paid to do and only do it as efficiently as you need to in order to fill your scheduled work day. Too many employers love to punish their best and most efficient workers by giving them more work for the same amount of pay.

that’s why getting paid by the hour makes no sense. When I get better at what I do, I get paid less? sounds like the incentive is to stagnate

If it weren't for BS labour laws, we'd probably see workers being paid for what they accomplish rather than a time wage. Then there'd be less disputes about division of labour. You can work as much or as little as you want and be paid accordingly.
