Pro Tip: Unless you're paid bonuses or commission, only do what you're paid to do and only do it as efficiently as you need to in order to fill your scheduled work day. Too many employers love to punish their best and most efficient workers by giving them more work for the same amount of pay.

Absolutely agree! It's important to set boundaries and prioritize self-care. Efficiency should be rewarded, not taken advantage of. Thanks for sharing this important reminder! #worklifebalance #selfcare.
that’s why getting paid by the hour makes no sense. When I get better at what I do, I get paid less? sounds like the incentive is to stagnate
💯 and meanwhile the mediocre workers get paid the same to do less than you
If it weren't for BS labour laws, we'd probably see workers being paid for what they accomplish rather than a time wage. Then there'd be less disputes about division of labour. You can work as much or as little as you want and be paid accordingly.
Yep
Never give ‘em an hundred percent, because then they’ll want it all the time.
Exactly 😂 It's so messed up
I had my own business from 2003-2010. I was used to giving 110%. I went to work elsewhere in 2010 for various reasons. Anyway, I remember my first week blowing through tasks and kicking ass. My boss came to me to congratulate me on a job well done, and told me to slow down, because his boss may start to notice and I should essentially only do enough work to not get fired... I thought he was joking, but I talked to other co-workers and realized that most people worked that way. And then I realized that my half assed work ethic was still light years ahead of other people's half assed work ethic. Shit is odd in corporate America.
So true, corporate world is odd for me. I prefer freelance life
It truly is odd. Definitely a different situation when it's your own business. I was taught growing up to always do your best, give it your all, go above and beyond, etc. Time and again I've seen how taking that approach just means you get taken advantage of. I'm watching my wife go through it right now getting taken advantage of at her current company with zero appreciation or added compensation, and she's about to leave for a different place with a much better work culture because of it. Which means they'll have to hire and train someone new all over again, which will cost them more than just paying her fairly. So dumb. lol
In my line of work there is no way to give less than your all. It is the most complex job I've done. It requires way too much brain power, emotional intelligence, empathy, accuracy & effectiveness. Or someone may get denied their chemo, or their preventive screening, or pay up to the nose for their ambulance ride.
On top of that, it is as taxing as hell. It consumes my all.
I cry myself to sleep a lot of the time.
People are hurting & I am way too intuitive. I can see some people's futures and it is quite scary sometimes, especially when you can't tell them.
I do, however sympathize with what you're saying. I'm not getting paid much more than a fast food worker now. And I wish I could "slack" a bit.
All I can do is take medical time off when possible, because I have to be in top performing shape the moment my headset beeps.
That pay is not worth your health. Find a new job.
Believe me, not for lack of trying.
Unfortunately, even the fast food joints over here aren't hiring. Regardless of my college education, experience, gained skills... It is a dog eat dog world out here.
It is scary. I was so desperate one time, I even put an ad on craigslist for house cleaning. I'm not only good at it, but I am honest, you know?
Crickets.... CRICKETS!!!
Terrifying, really.
So What do I do in the meanwhile? Try my best to convince an 85 year old not to kill himself for 3 hours while assessing how emergency services could help him (if at all). And then, if I have any brain function after that?
I draw....
I see, yea that sounds like it would take a toll over time. Glad you have an outlet with drawing but I imagine it can get pretty exhausting emotionally. Pardon my previous reply if it sounded abrupt.
Nope.
It sounded real.
I have a disability due to a brain injury. It basically it keeps me awake. 24/7. It feels like I'm being tortured. the second I start feeling like dozing off, a surge runs from the very center of my brain to my heart and I'm awaken in terror every 35 to 45 seconds.
This has rendered me unable to drive anymore. I used to ride a motorcycle. It now collects dust. I can't sell it because my husband had to engineer the clutch. I have an injury which makes using my left hand extremely painful. Not easy since I was left handed.
So pulling that damn clutch in was hard. He modified it and I was happy to have been able to ride... that lasted me a year as after that, the radiation they did for my thyroid truly broke me. I already was not sleeping, but I could manage. After that? the not sleeping just became misery.
So I am limited as to how far I can commute for a job, and small towns don't have much going on at all, let alone having any decent method of public transportation.
I still don't give up. My lifespan may not be very long, but I can guarantee you. I don't know how I am gonna do it, but when my number's up, Ima gonna go guns a blazin'!!!
Like Nina Van Horn and her "Death Kiss my Ass" dress !!!
Agreed.
An exception is when you are working as a freelancer it sometimes pays off to over-deliver. A client may ask for a certain amount of content but may change their mind and want more when they are offered quality extras. If a product developer sees a chance to sell more products they are inclined to do so as far as their budget allows.
Yea it's definitely different when you're in business for yourself or even just when you know that added effort is likely to generate sales/bonuses/commission/etc. I'm talking above about hourly/salaried jobs where there's no benefit to you if you do extra work.
