The Long Goodbye (1973)

Directed by Robert Altman

Hi everyone!

Our film this week is one of Altman’s very best. Raymond Chandler’s 1953 novel of the same name is updated to contemporary Los Angels in Altman’s 1973 adaptation. Elliot Gould is simply wonderful as private eye Philip Marlowe, who is hired by Eileen Wade (Nina Van Pallant) to find her husband, a novelist, who has disappeared.

Altman has fun playing with the conversations and clichés of the hard-boiled genre of the late 1940s and early ’50s, drawing out the contrasts between the two eras.

Visually, the film is quintessential Altman. Scenes are full of reflections and the camera floats slowly, drifting through windows, zooming in on surfaces.

What’s not to love!

If you haven’t seen it yet you’re in for a real treat! ❤️🍿🎬🍿❤️

I've been meaning to watch this, Nashville and The Player. I've neglected Altman like a fool 😒

He’s one of the best! Nashville is brilliant. But McCabe and Mrs Miller is probably my favourite. Short Cuts is really good too. And 3 Women. I could keep listening them 😂— I guess they’re all great!
