I don't understand some people. If a person encounters someone who has things they want, what sense does it make to react with hostility instead of interest & curiosity?

I think it's societal conditioning. It makes more sense to approach with an open mind like you pointed out, but most aren't interested the in the how. Just the outcome, not realizing that the external is typically a representation of internal nature.
Some people are living a literal hell on earth of their own making.
