Why does Nostr seem to be so closely associated with BitCoin / cryptocurrencies?
Do they somehow depend on each other or are they just complementary but still independent?
(I don't care for cryptocurrencies at all, so would nope out of Nostr if there are dependencies)

There's no dependency as such.
But most of the devs who build Nostr clients and early users are from Bitcoin community
Hence, a lot of Bitcoin discussion & there's also zaps on Nostr- you can reward the author of a note by sending them sats (very small unit of Bitcoin equivalent to 100th of a cent) using Lightning.
Zaps require a Lightning wallet but that's optional. You can use Nostr completely zap-free like I do, however, you'll miss out on a few features -that's all

Nostr drinks from decentraliced technology so we can say that in that sence the phylosophy behind in is the same as bitcoins and that is why all bitcoiners like it. It might take some time till non-bitcoin communities start gaining dominance within nostr.
