Any of you folks with chickens out there, my new chickens seem totally uninterested in anything except protein for food. They like bugs, bits of meat, and their crumbles. But they just wont eat anything green. I've tried salad greens, comfrey, weeds, daikon radish, nothing works. Everyone else's chickens seem to love green stuff. Any ideas? #grownostr #chickens

Baby chicks?

I think around 2-3 mo's old.

Try covering their food with a light layer of chopped grass.

That way they associate foraging with green.

Thanks, I will try this.

🤝

Maybe they're teenagers...

Yes maybe, hope they get over that quickly.

Mine eat green things off living plants I want to keep alive.

Cuz they’re turds.

They really like to eat new green things.. like seedlings.

Cuz they’re turds.

I throw green things in the run and they won’t eat them in front of me. Yet they magically disappear when before I return.

Cuz they’re turds.

Lol try sprouting grain out and throw it to them after you’ve let it grow a few inches

How old are the chickens?

Are they a different breed than you had previously?

We have had some that have been selective on their feed choices for periods of time. If they are deficient in protein as they are putting on weight or getting ready to lay eggs, their diet might change.

I would be curious if it lasts more than a season or perhaps if it is breed-specific.

I think they'te 2-3 months old, barred rock. Not laying yet.

You mentioned some of the thing you are feeding, do you also offer conventional feed? Either store bought or whole?

We use something similar to the Salatin mix which I think is 3-corn, 2-soy, 1-oat. Obviously corn and soy can be replaced by similar nutrient/protein mixes.

When ours have a feed mix available we can more easily see what they are eating more of i.e. what they are deficient in.

Weird, ours eat all kinds of greens... Grass, salad greens, etc.

Guess I need to up my mealworm game.
