Government sites that shorten your password without telling you are a nightmare. You can reset your password with a long one, but you can never log in with it. Then everything works with a short one.
Any website that doesn't accept 72 characters for the password is misunderstanding security

I went with 12 for this site.

Yes. Maybe I could have gotten away with 16, but didn't care to try every number.
