The National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) is a large area of land designated to minimize electromagnetic interference that could affect the performance of radio telescopes and other sensitive electronic equipment. Spanning approximately 13,000 square miles, it is located in the states of West Virginia, Virginia, and a small part of Maryland in the United States. Established in 1958, the NRQZ provides a protective shield for the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia and the Sugar Grove Station in Virginia, which are involved in radio astronomy and intelligence gathering operations, respectively.
Within the NRQZ, restrictions are placed on all types of radio frequency transmitters to prevent interference with the sensitive equipment. This includes not only commercial broadcasts but also smaller scale transmissions from mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, and even microwave ovens in certain areas. The enforcement of these restrictions is managed by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which work together to ensure that new and existing transmissions comply with the NRQZ's strict guidelines.
