I don't know their laws but maybe she's worried about getting benefits for her family, or life insurance.
If you kill yourself in many places you can lose those benefits.
Sure it is statist, but in this case it's probably worth going through the legal channels because of the stresses on the family.
The courage to kill yourself however you want is between a person and their body and their own soul.
Do you think she wouldn't even try if there wasn't a State sponsored pathway? Are we sure she gets any payouts at all if she goes through the State? If she did get the benefits on insurance then how long before those companies take that clause out of the policy? If they do then will all life insurance policies flow through State companies and what effect will that have downstream in time?
Nothing about this is kosher. Of course, that's only my opinion but everything about this is screaming in my ear that something is wrong.
I'd say it's probably an accepted norm wherever she's from.

Depression can be torture.
Having made that decision I can't imagine thinking straight. But not because she has mental illnesses. Because this is stressful.
I've lost 4 friends to suicide in the last 8 years. One I can figure out. The other three I will never know why. Not ever. I get the "wanting to". I get the doing it. I don't get the seeking of a third party (license) approval.

I figured you had direct experience and I'm sorry for your losses as well. I think the only reason I haven't personally considered it is because I'm too busy trying to figure out what life even means in the first damn place.
Not to be flippant but I was just thinking that biology is decidedly suicidal: Other organisms are always trying to kill you and if they don't succeed then your own cells decide one day, "Yeah mother fucker. You're done."
Happy to tell both of them to go fuck themselves. If for no other reason than to gain that satisfaction.
