Using Proton Drive and/or self-hosting for sensitive data—for the somewhat tech-savvy, buying a Synology NAS makes this pretty straightforward (though it's not open-source). There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube and the web that show you how to easily set up a personal or family cloud backup, and their photos app works great for photo backups. This would also allow people to self-host their own NextCloud instance on it.
