The US Federal Reserve creating their own "digital currency" is absolutely an attempt at competing against Bitcoin.

However, they overlook one of the main incentives to Bitcoin, which is transaction anonymity in the absence of a centralized 3rd party. Bitcoin will remain to be the obvious choice.
