Every time I open it, there's tons of popups. I do not care that you can now make a little dude dance next to your name for $6 a month.
I used to live on it during the pandemic. How my friends stayed in touch. But yeah it has really turned cash grabby now. I now get on it... Once a week? To get a Zoom link to a weekly meeting.
I wish more projects would switch to matrix at least
It's absolutely cash grabby. I get that. They gave away a free service for the better part of a decade. They have to make money somehow. It's just a big turn off though.

Yeah I 100% get them charging for some premium benefits but mother of god they went hard in the paint with their revenue structure to the point it turned me and, looking at the servers i’m in, a lot of other people off. Just kinda.. Annoying now.
Looks like we're gonna see more of businesses that have been built by giving free stuff away, trying to figure out how to make a profit. Hopefully they transition well or die quickly.
This is why we need protocols and not platforms. There is no pressure to make money here. Just communicate like we all want.

Sometimes we just code for fun. I don't plan on charging anything for my client, nor do I have any money making ideas. I just want a client tailored to me, so I'm making it.
Yes thank you for that, I think that's great and a lot of amazing software gets built like that. I just mean its tough to sustain and get to the scale of something like discord that way. I hope that changes maybe with value for value, lowing friction of micro payments etc
It absolutely does for Discord, because they're a platform. Email does not have that problem. Centralizing around a massive data center costs a lot of money. Running your own email server or Bitcoin node or Nostr nice is mostly free.
solid relays and storage will cost someone $$$ no getting around that really even if clients all get built on donations
