well some people might ask if you have ever shit yourself and they may not even bring up the pants, in which case if you shit into your pants maybe you haven't shat yourself because the pants are not you, we can not be defined by our pants

Yeah but they only say “shit yourself” when it just happened like in front of them. When it’s a “have you ever” questions, it’s usually shit your pants in my experience
