Fun facts about Telegram:

* has its own shitcoin

* is not end to end encrypted by default

* doesn’t support encrypted group chats

* is Russian owned

* is centralized

Nostr holds the promise of being an alternative, but in the meantime, I recommend checking out the matrix protocol: https://matrix.org/

One good client for it is https://element.io/

“But what about Signal?”

Signal is okay, and a better alternative to a lot of chat apps but it’s centralized, and has privacy issues (you have to sign up with a phone number). Its creator Moxie doesn’t seem to think decentralization is a good idea (in general) and expresses his views at length here: https://youtu.be/Nj3YFprqAr8

Exactly. Moxie imo showed his real motives when he decided to create his own shitcoin instead of implementing LN payments into Signal.

💯

Now that Keet.io has an app, it is well positioned to replace Signal!

Yeah Keet could be good, I haven’t taken a dive on their security yet so as of now I have a higher confidence threshold for Matrix, also because it’s been battle tested.

Thank you kind sir 🧐

> is russian owned

Whats wrong with that, pidor? If anything it's a good thing for you being backdored by a foreign government instead of your own for a change.

It’s fun facts, you tell me, целка

you are mostly correct!

however the “is russian owned” bit is not factual:

Durov is UAE citizen

Gotcha, thanks for that 🙏 the early development and hosting was done in Russia, that’s more what I was getting at

Interesting 🤙

I’ve also heard of/noticed some NOSTR messaging options as well, have you? Or tried any? Altho makes sense if encryption/privacy is your primary concern relay-based-decentralization may not be necessary per se

Umbrel can install both this and a Nostr relay too, BTW.

For P2P private chats, I really don't see #nostr being a solution. It can be made to work out, but seems kind of clumsy for it, especially compared to matrix protocol

Telegram is only one bit better than WhatsApp.

Have anyone tried #briar protocol & app?? I've hear nothing but good things about it

I haven’t, thanks for sharing it with me

If you want to give it a try just DM me

Matrix has decent adoption but I think its too complicated. There's a reason Elements is the only good client

IMO we should push people into XMPP. The Conversations app on fdroid is a smoother experience than Matrix has ever given me on any frontend
