Perhaps it’s time to reconsider our entire approach to progress.

All progress involves change, but not all change is progress. Change is inevitable, progress is not. History demonstrates this repeatedly with the demise and extinction of whole civilizations. Change can just as easily lead to stagnation, regression, deterioration, and extinction. These alternatives make it clear that discerning the path that leads to genuine progress is one of the great challenges every society faces (and every person).

Our ability to meet this challenge rests upon our consciousness and spiritual qualities. Many people would like to believe that progress is solely dependent on our intellectual capacity to innovate and that our conscious awareness is irrelevant to the quest. This simply isn’t true. To look beyond societal normalities and toward the pull of your authentic being, with a goal of accomplishing the most good for the most people, conscious awareness is not only necessary it is essential. The idea of genuine progress being accomplished by people who are incapable of looking at challenges through the eyes of another with indifferences is lunacy.

The culture’s aggression toward morality and dismissal of anything spiritual will be the major obstacles to progress in society from this moment onward. A people confused about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad, just and unjust, will grasp at anything that promises progress and find themselves bouncing from one oblivion to another.

Determining what will cause a society to flourish begins with acknowledging what causes an individual human being to flourish.

Our lives only genuinely improve when we grow in spirit. The growth of our spirit, and living our truth significantly improves our lives. It improves our relationships. Two people walking in their authenticity and truth will always have a better relationship than two people conforming to what society, friends, and relatives expect of them.

People keep insisting on progress, but maybe we should consider a new approach. What will bring about the human flourishing that progress promises but so rarely delivers? Divine Conscious Moments. Which of our problems would not be solved if we could summon enough divine moments?

The next great wave of progress will be the fruit of our compassion, generosity, love, patience, kindness, discipline, gentleness, forgiveness, empathy, and friendship. Not technology. Not economics. Not innovation. Not politics. The progress we desperately need will only be achieved with divine Moments, awakening our spirits to love of self, our fellow humans, and authentic truth.
