what DM standards exist?
NIP-4(sucky bu easy standard) , NIP-17(good but large groups are impossible) , MLS on nostr - very scalable to large groups, but new and complicated.

Yeah that's a step towards MLS idk if anybody's doing it except Keychat, also there's a custom implementation on 0xChat that does forward secrecy with alias pubkeys that's also worth mentioning 😛
You can try the new version of 0xchat with MLS group.
If they're a social app NIP-17 is all they'll ever need, if you're looking to specifically make a signal alternative, then MLS is the only way to do large group chats.
