Gotta find some fermented pickled herring to really win. I've not been able to find any locally. Regular pickled herring, sure, but that's actually pretty tasty stuff.

Shrimp paste works to chase white people away according to Uncle Roger but I think it's still an order of magnitude away from fermented herring.

Hah!! My mom is Thai. I am familiar with the smell of shrimp paste 😆

I enjoy it well enough -- good source of umami -- but I do somewhat get what people find off putting.

I also eat natto though so I may be more funk-tolerant than average.

The American palette is an odd one. What's the point of getting the whole world to demand your arbitrarily printed paper if you don't even want the food they produce?

That said I suspect in Iceland I may meet my match. Still looking forward to the challenge of gamelost (aged blue skim milk cheese).
