I don't really like disembarking without having something connecting me to the boat, and I have no idea what people do at docks without one (I guess pull the whole thing out of the water? seems like a lot of work for a problem I could solve with a little piece of line)

Most docks for motorboats that I've encountered are far, far too high for either of us to get in or out of our boats. If we can use it, on bigger water, or in boat traffic, the boat's just gonna get banged around against the dock anyway, so if I can get out, I'll pull it out.
