Am I the only one that doesn’t think nostr will ever replace YouTube?

Are we supposed to pretend that the expense/technical challenge of hosting, processing, and streaming videos is going to be handled reliably by my uncle Jim and yours?

We aren’t even anywhere close to replacing existing text-only use cases at scale and I can’t help but think we’d be further along if we didn’t spend so much time with our heads in the clouds.

Good morning!

BLOB storage/buckets and CDNs seem inevitable. Until then, no chance. Bullish on nostr, but it’s not for everything.

your projection is based on the ongoing maintenance of the idea of consumer network connections as being second class citizens

probably will be solved if people can pay more to get better guarantees and service but it is a difficult question how to do it, yet, when you think about it, it must eventually be the thing

proximity to big pipes obviously will change the price you pay, because if you want a high quality connection far from the trunk you have to build a trunk grade connection to your locatation

but currently, consumer internet is utter shit, and this is also why the dream of IPv6 has still to be fulfilled

Nostr relies on uncompressed plain human readable json for which the signatures need to be verified by every party.

It will forever be text-only and that's fine.

blossom.

I can’t help but thinking… despite the navel gazing and self indulgence … and however it shapes up … Nostr is gonna find some niche and own that. There is a core of what is important that no other freedom tech does as well. We’ll get there…

I think similar to how smaller blocks on bitcoin are necessary for decentralization, we will need minimal text based communication to overcome the challenges of censorship on nostr.

In the future we may have:

- Smoll-relay maxis -> good for outbox model / decentralization

- Text-only maxis (kind 1) --> easy to relay / unstoppable

- Smoll-follow list maxis (kind 3) ---> good for WoT / nostr dunbar number

YouTube and anything similar that requires big data and processing power will just naturally lead to centralization because of the costs.

We may need the "Other Stuff" to grow nostr's network effect, and hopefully we can do it in a way that it won't become a "Communication vs Everything Else war" (ie block size war)
