Does running a node afford maintenance? Or is it a set it and forget it thing? 🤔

More of your time rebalancing and monitoring

Thanks 🙏 can you estimate how much time it takes? Like 2 hours a month or something like that?

It all depends, you get what you put in. There are programs and scripts that help automate rebalancing. I'd day it was like 2 hours a week or ~10 a month

Thanks 🙏 that’s reasonable

It takes at least a few hours a week. You can skip a few weeks, and probably longer, but that will deteriorate your node.

So what tasks are therecto do? Sounds like cleaning up? 🤔

I lose a few channels a week, so need to look at new channels to open. Keep up with software releases ans execute upgrades, general checking for errors.

Sorry mate, #[4] mase me aware i didn’t specify i was talking about Bitcoin node, not lightning 😅

Oh, that's almost set and forget. Maybe so an upgrade once a year, that's it. If you have a flaky connection, might need to restart is occasionally.

Nice that was what i wanted to hear 😅

What do you want to use the node for? A node is only useful when you use it.

I want to use sparrow with my own node and also be part of the Bitcoin network ☺️

Just run bitcoin on your pc, unless it's really ancient. Much easier.

🤯 du i have to keep it always on?

No you don’t!

Nice, that’s great news actually 🙏

No, only if the machine's been off for a while it takes a bit of time to catch up.

A few seconds per block, so a day turned off takes maybe a minute or two.

So cool … it’s so cool to imagine that the processing of worldwide transactions can be done by you computer in minutes 🤯

Very good

The Bitcoin wallet software turns your PC into a node.

If you just running a bitcoin node then it’s pretty much set and forget👍🏻

But if you are thinking about running a lightning node then it’s much more to be done. But in the end it’s worth it👌⚡️

Oooohh. i didn’t specify, talking about Bitcoin node here 😅

You can set up a bitcoin node on any computer. As long as you have it running at least 6h a day you’re good👍🏻

Have it running 24/7 is obviously the best👌

How big needs the harddrive to be? 1 Terra Byte enough?

1TB should last a couple of years👍🏻

Noice 🙏🫂💜

Not true. I had a bitcoin node running on a 500GB drive and it filled it up in 6 months. Probably should turn on pruning and keep it to about 100GB or so.

That’s because the blockchain is 533GB as we speak. Max 4MB per block so you can count how long 1TB would last!

Which means that 1TB would be full in about 1 year.

Around 200gb if all blocks are maxed, per year!

If you need a full node and want to do blockchain sleuthing yes, or better 2TB. If you want to verify incoming transactions 100MB is fine with a pruned node.

So i can run sparrow with a pruned node ?

I’m running a full node but it should work with a pruned node as well!
