Does anyone on #nostr use an Umbrel Home?

I currently have Umbrel running on a Raspberry Pi and the performance is not ideal.

Been thinking about upgrading.

Thoughts?

Looks interesting but you can just get a NUC for cheaper for same or better performance

Old laptop node.

Built-in wifi, bluetooth, camera, monitor, keyboard, and a battery backup.

I’ve seen a couple of people say this as well. Scoop up an old Lenovo laptop and run Umbrel OS. The main benefit here would be the removable battery.

I can recommend Hp & Dell business models too. Stay away from home consumer devices and you can expect some longevity. Also, stick with a model that has upgradable ram/ssd instead of scraping the bottom of the barrel (like a chromebook).

Also, I’m shying away from umbrel in favor of start9, but I’m experimenting with Nix-Bitcoin. Such a pita, hope it’s worth it. Pretty sure it will be, but not for the fainthearted.

I too run umbrel on a raspberry pi and don't have any performance issues. Have u installed heat sinks and a fan? How much memory do you have?

I like my little home built nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll Embassy I have running on a Pi. I’m planning to upgrade to one of their beefier boxes soon. I was also running an Umbrel, but never put anything important on it. Their recent ā€œphoning homeā€ kerfuffle convinced me to unplug it.

Interesting. I will have to look into that, unaware of the ā€œkerfuffleā€ lol

The Umbrel box apparently makes a call to their server every hour, revealing its IP. Pretty awful behavior from a ā€œsovereignā€ box.

Agree, this is not great… Thanks for sharing!

This is the other route I was considering

Yes. It usually hovers around the 35-40 C temp range and it has 4GB total RAM.

With 4GB of memory you are really constrained in how much apps you can run

I recommend enumerating what specifically you want to run on the server and then acquire hardware sized accordingly.

Raspberry pi is fine for just a few things like Bitcoin, Electrum Server, Lightning and a Block Explorer.

When you start adding much more memory and CPU intensive apps you'll run into performance bottlenecks.

The same will go for Umbrel Home. You cant run all the apps it makes available just as you wouldnt be able to do on any hardware.

Support from Umbrel is still coming up short, so buying the Umbrel Home device is really making a significant donation to that company to keep building products. You can get the same (or better) specced hardware for cheaper elsewhere

Umbrel is exciting but still early project. The speed improvements they advertise on their site are accurate but deceiving.

They say umbrel home device X times faster or better than raspberry pi 4gb

What they are really saying is mini Pc with 16gb ram and market rate specs is X times faster than raspberry pi 4gb.

It’s just hardware and there’s nothing proprietary about the umbrel home hardware.

The one value prop vs getting a cheaper mini pc is Umbrel home comes preloaded with Umbrel. If you’re not comfortable with docker and CLI I can see the strong appeal and such a purchase easy justified.

Yeah this is sort of what I’m encountering. I am running a Bitcoin node, Lightning node (which is currently having issues), Electrum server, Nostr relay, and Tailscale.

Ideally, I’d love to run a few more apps like Nextcloud server and maybe like a Vaultwarden instance.

Need a more reliable solution before I go down that path.

FWIW I dont mix non Bitcoin stuff with the Bitcoin servers. Things like nextcloud and vaultwarden go on separate machine

Good advice!
