My brother-in-law can’t get his head around the fact that he doesn’t actually own any of the stock he thinks he owns. I said, “Ok, if you own them, let me see them. Do you have the certs here in the house?”

the custodian doesn't even custody your stocks. they're actually owned by some alphabet corporation no one has ever heard of.

Use Enron as an example. Everyone thought they owned their shares also. I remember it well. Just one example of many. If it's centralized, you don't control it. If you don't control it, you don't own it.
