Vanity points I guess? The in-group status, the feeling of being a gatekeeper, all these things do weird shit to people. The prisoner experiment comes to mind.
Also, people get stuck in habits. When things gradually get worse they don’t notice and now they’re stuck in a career that isn’t what they hoped it would be, but it pays the mortgage and keeps the family afloat so quitting is scary.
