Went most of my life without even really knowing it was an option. Got interested randomly around the beginning of COVID and went from an introductory flight to my certificate in 4 months. If you’re ever just a tiny bit interested - take an introductory flight at a local airport!
We have one and I looked into lessons. They ain’t cheap but were surprisingly less than I expected considering they’re providing the plane.
I’ve always wanted to fly. Army wouldn’t let me because I’m Red/Green colorblind. Does that cause any issues with licensing?
It’s a very expensive hobby that is definitely the downside. It will send you in to financial ruin with a smile on your face though.
I don’t know enough to say for sure, but I believe certain color blindness may come with additional restrictions but still can get the necessary medical certificate. Don’t quote me though.
Thanks Mazin. I’ll definitely look into it. I fly in every video game my group plays in out of angst for not being able to do the real thing. I should fix that.

Depends what plane and where you’re located. Average 172 rental (what most people train in) where I’m located is ~175/hr plus another 50 for the instructor. Takes somewhere between 40-80 hours to get your private pilot license depending on how frequently you fly and study.
Are you in America?
Yes, should’ve said USD. I imagine prices/availability can vary massively by country. America is certainly king of general aviation.

Do it! I started by buying a textbook and studying for the written test. I also found a video course online that helped. I figured if I still want to do it after that, I’ll spend the money and actually learn.
The good news, at least for me, was the material was actually interesting.
