A fellow Laptop LN Node maxi? ⚡⚡

I bought one the day that RPi4 launched. I feel bad because I didn't buy two, three, or four.

🤝

it depends, but for something like mynode it's tough

I won one in a paper airplane flight distance contest before they became valuable

Only redeeming qualities of RPI is 10 watt power use and the small form factor.

The new orange pi is way faster. I'm really excited to see how Qualcomm Oryon turns out. M1 and m2 are already here and awesome if you swing that way. If you just dislike the rpi in particular, I get it. If you are anti arm desktops and servers, the future is now old man.

I like old used workstations with 10x compute power for 90% less $$

I like to buy or build a rocket ship then drive it till the wheels fall off. Makes upgrade time feel super special. My laptop went from 5400 spinny disc to TB nvme and weighed half as much for example.

Why no love for the Pi?

Slow, expensive, ARM

Mostly junk hardware made for toys. If I were rebuilding my node again today I wouldn’t use one.

I spent a lot of my early career in manufacturing PCBA’s. It was an interesting experience. I worked for a defense contractor where we would repurpose old (used, bc obsoleted) through hole IC’s because upgrading the design and therefore the product was a slow and costly undertaking.

Yeah I’m looking at a refurbished hp mini pc for $150 that will run circles around the Pi.

I wouldn't call them bad either, I'm not sure why they seem to get so much hate. I probably will end up getting one of Pine64's sbc offerings eventually tho. I'm a huge fan of theirs and own a Pinephone, Pinecil (soldering iron), PinePower (desktop power supply) & a handful of accessories.
