The site linked is a great faq site and can help you understand what a relay is and does.
For finding people i linked a post with popular hashtags and you could try out Primal or snort those clients focus a lot on discovery
Vibe wise imo its amazing a very live and let live and no algo causes the incentive to be friendly compared to rage bait content being pushed. Of course my opinion

You dont need to disconnect from paid relays
The general recommend paid one is the wine relay it is however adviced to not have around 15 relays tops because it can slow down with to many.
Snort is a webclient a different way to interact with the nostr protocol meaning if damus gets restricted or taken down you can continue on a different client.
