The implanted electrodes aren't very safe or very reliable, and may never be.
Evolution has spent a long time and optimised a lot of hardware to drive human hands and eyes, I don't see neurosurgery and nanotechnology duplicating that, especially not reliably.
For those who are able to use them, the keyboard and the screen are probably the highest-bandwidth IO we are likely to get.
