The pain of Nvidia drivers on Linux never ceases to amaze
Discussion
this is why I only buy amd gpus
I have an AMD 6700XT using the open source drivers. The graphical environment randomly crashes frequently. There are many bug reports on the freedesktop site about the issue. Is AMD any better than Nvidia on Linux? The proprietary Nvidia drivers were stable at least.
I have been running amdgpu for like 10+ years with no issues between 3 cards, I'm even running their bleeding edge card (9070xt) no issues. what kernel version are you on ?
I'm running Archlinux with kernel 6.15.4 and this issue persists even after I replaced the original 6700XT with a new 6700XT. Here is a mile long thread about the issue on the freedesktop gitlab if you are interested in the gory details:
I thought they fixed this?
By fixed do you mean break networking when installing their drivers? lol
I wanted to switch to Linux from Windows for PC gaming and apparently this was fixed.
However, when I run Linux mint on the NVIDIA card, it starts to do some wonky things after some time too - but then I updated the drivers. I read somewhere that NVIDIA fixed issues and the drivers are now smooth out the box, but yet to actually run any games on it!
It's a shame.
Will anyone rid me of these trouble some closed source NVIDA driver's?
It never ceases to amaze me since the best usage of pytorches Cuda cores can only be leveraged in Linux. The problem is, it’s nearly impossible to get the right drivers and environment set up
AMD all the way
Why did you pick Nvidia if you don't mind me asking?
