GM! Tariffs on steel and aluminum are the dumbest possible type of tariff - those on unfinished goods. Steel are aluminum are almost always “ingredients” to some sort of final product. When you tariff those you make the “ingredients” for American manufacturers more expensive than their international counterparts. Thus you have a gigantic decrease in competitiveness of almost all manufacturers in the US against a comparatively tiny benefit to the domestic metal industry. This is retarded. I said the same when Obama did it. Tariffs on finished goods can make sense, tariffs on unfinished goods are just shooting yourself in the foot with a cannon.
