The top part of a tortoise shell, the scutes, grow by adding new layers at the edges and beneath older layers. It makes perfect sense that the Earth could grow similarly at the edges of tectonic plates.
In Iceland, you see it growing in the geysers, gases, cracks, and volcanoes. Solids, liquids and gases are being ejected 24/7, and that's what's going on at the ocean ridges. More and more and more mass ejected. This crack was at right angles to the mid-Atlantic ridge:
