Follow lists are the solution to the problem of finding some particular subset of items (in this case, npubs) within a very large set. A set the size of "all Twitter users" or "all Instagram users", for example.

They are a solution to a problem we do not have.

Our problem is the opposite:

We have lots of disparate data sets and need to find particular items somewhere in them.

Totality of our (nostr) dataset is under 0.5TiB uncompressed and easy to search 😂

Yeah, and we have relays and filters and etc., people act like this stuff is hard.

I see lists as useful for some subset of would-be follows, maybe, (although relationships would be more useful), but basing everyone's feed on follows is archaic.
