Cracks me up that people think today’s social media is so terrible for kids.

Back in the day we’d be talking to god knows who in aol chat grooms - probably 90% pedos and we came out alright.

If concerned, just talk to the kid and explain this world to them, but even without this conversation they’ll be ok.

Different age and different parenting. The hell and mayhem when I was growing up in the 70s would get my parents arrested today.

Helicopter parenting seems to have taken a sharper turn than it did here in Japan. Kids are much more independent.

Same here in China once children get to around 7 or 8 years old. They do a ton of household chores.

The amount of people using a computer to commit a crime has skyrocketed in the past 30 years.

Pedos will always exist, yes..but the existing information systems today's children are interacting with have heightened risks for encountering child sexual predators that we didn't have in the early 2000s.

The prevalence of dating apps, underground CP and sex trafficking rings, and unmoderated social media groups is out there.

I find it extremely hard to believe that the internet of today is less safe than the Wild West internet of the 90s.

Watch a few hours of people who create content on YouTube/Rumble catching child sexual predators..it's a massive problem.

It's not the same internet, centralized service providers have concentrated the attack surface for today's youth.

And a less interesting argument, but still important, to me is the use of Bitcoin and other cryptos to facilitate these crimes. Overall, it's gotten easier to use a computer to commit a crime. It is a problem with the existing platforms 100%

So true. Also the famous "You got mail" usually meant spam from porn sites and all the bad stuff. Parents need to talk to their kids. I feel like that solves most issues. Instead they send them off to government schools all day and barely talk to them when they get home.

Sure... At a big honking desktop, likely on dialup, and even then there were issues. See what launched Chris Hanson's career. But now it's on their phone or even watch, with a camera, connected 24hrs, stared at far too much.

It's not the same.

I'm lucky, the internet didn't exist for me until I was already an adult.

Prior to that pedos just hung out at the park. Much safer 😂

A/S/L?

Do you have kids?

Yea but too young for that stuff
