My state government just sent me a letter saying they have a discrepancy on their record for my income tax from last year and that I owe them over $1000 and the form they provided me is identical to what I filed.
Called, no operators. Live chat is a shitty chatbot. Email auto-response: Please allow 8-12 weeks for processing.

I vote don't respond. Something something responding is consent and they make you sign contracts as a subtle way of gaining your consent. I'm not a lawyer.
If it's the US , try the taxpayers advocacy line. Or call a lawyer.
Two days ago I got a letter like from my state govt but it's for 2021, so on top of the $1000 they added over $1500 in fees
