GM nostr!

One of my favorite things about living in a warm climate is having cool little lizards all over the place. The Texas spiny lizards and geckos we have are jumpy and nervous, and run away at every disturbance, but these green anoles are very chill. They'll hang out with you and watch you while you're in the garden, and only run away when they feel seriously threatened. I know a guy who trained one that lived in his woodpile to be hand fed. He'd catch bugs and feed it, until it eventually learned to recognize him and would come out for a treat whenever he walked by. They're cool little dudes.

I used to play with those as a kid. I did have one bite me pretty good once, but usually they were very chill even when being handled.

One of the neighbor kids is a little girl who loves animals. Every once in a while she'll catch one and carry it around with her for a while. Not many wild animals will tolerate that!

Those lizards and the little green grass snakes were the two best wild animals to handle. They were chill if you were gentle with them and they would just crawl or slither around my hands and arms.

I caught a tiny, earth worm sized grass snake once and brought it into the house when my grandmother was visiting. I showed it to her. She went ballistic on my Mom for not teaching me to stay away from snakes because of the poisonous ones. I knew all of the poisonous ones that I needed to stay away from. There were only 4 where I lived: diamond back rattle snake, water moccasin, copper head, and coral snake. I could touch anything else. It was only the bright green grass snakes that I picked up because they were so chill.

It's really amazing how many people are irrational about snakes. Those tiny little grass snakes or brown earth snakes aren't even big enough to get a bite on you, even if they were venomous. Yet people still freak out about a little snake the size of a pencil. A lot of folks out in the country will still kill any snake they see, which is stupid. Then they'll complain about having mice and rats everywhere...

Love those anoles😊

Love them too! This little guy (if you can find him) is keeping bugs off my orange tree.
