I have version 0.5.4 still installed on my Ubuntu machine.
Are there clear instructions out there for the 1.0+ migration for those not on raspberry pi or the umbrel home?

Not sure if you saw this, but iIt looks like their community forum has a section for this, but you might need an account to access it. I get an error when I try.
