Lord of the Rings still stands above all fantasy and sci-fi literature written ever since. No book or series comes close to displaying the same care for liberty and moral values shown in LOTR. It's the only fantasy novel not set in a fiat world.

Change my mind.

Seriously, it would be nice to come across fantasy or sci-fi that doesn't just devolve into a socialist dystopian nightmare.

The world I'm writing is not a fiat world. Yet. (I plan a sequel that will get into the attempt to introduce fiat and how bad it is.)

Also, to state for clarity:

I'm not, nor will I ever be as good at Tolkien. I'm not trying to be. I just write freedom into my stories.

Agreed. Lord of the Rings is a remarkable series written by a man who was educated in a way that people just aren't anymore.

It's a damn shame.

I think an underlying factor is Tolkien fought in WWI.

And...as good as the movies were, there was SO MUCH that was left on the cutting room floor...

Like Bill the pony--who actually is in the film for just a few seconds...clearly they filmed it, but Bill got cut...

But a bit of an easter egg... 😃

Bill is the best character in Lord of the Rings change my mind 😂 "He swished his tail and said nothing." is one of my favorite lines in the books.

But yeah, I totally agree.

IDK, but I love Sapkowski and his world. Read everything he ever wrote and it keeps me stunned how hones and raw it is.

Yes, it's a nightmare and a warning.

I need to read his books. I've heard many good things about The Witcher series. Thanks 👍

I read some of the witcher books since I was exposed to the video game. I was disappointed. The moral framework felt very secular.

I read everything way before movies/shows (btw wiedzmin show was really good if you don't mind really low cost cgi).

I don't think there's such a thing there as a moral framework. And I find that realistic. Just bunch of actors with their own views...

Try Amber series from Zelazny as well.

100%. While I’ve enjoyed other fantasy and sci-fi series, nothing compares to Lord of the Rings. Tolkien was way ahead of his time and set the bar so high that everyone that came after him has just been trying to recapture the same magic
