back when I was looking for a husband (aka dating), I offered to split the check when I didn't want any future dates with that person. No need for them to spend money on me when it didn't pan out.

The men that accepted and were happy about it were clueless that our values didn't align. The men that reluctantly accepted to split knew they didn't pass muster. I almost never came across men who expected us to split the check but that's probably because other signs would have made me reject them early on.

I've never had a guy not offer to pay, but yeah, I would sometimes offer to "go Dutch". Definitely sending a "this wasn't so great" signal.

The good dates got a second date, where I'd cook them dinner or arrange a nice picnic, or something.
