Are there any issues with using Wallet of Satoshi as a zap wallet?

Somehow I lost all my lightning channels (and sats) on my Umbrel. This includes Alby hub.

Simple they say. Well I can break anything.

I use WoS to zap. it doesn't like when I run a vpn but works in the US.

I've been bashing #alby for their "hub" thing, they took a nice wallet and made it complicated, and unreliable

Thanks Jim. I thought WoS was banned in US?

#smij #zapd just now with wos. :)

I keep up to 50k sats in several wallets. I figure if one rug pulls I won't be hurt too bad. I can always zap it out to another if I get nervous.

I've got a few wallets laying around as well

Lightning channels are best established with people you actually know IMO. I've heard enough stories about LSPs closing channels without telling customers. Just a sats grab. Hook in with a meetup group and open channels with each other and some channels with larger LN nodes. Circular economies.

Thanks. I am still trying to sort it it

No problem, I use it myself and it’s really good

Well...WoS is custodial, so "not your keys - not your coins".

I learned it the hard way from another custodal wallet I had my coins on and got rugpulled a few months ago.

So custodial for very small amounts only.

They also almost all require a KYC-like user identification.

Using them anonymously is usually not possible.

(Or maybe somebody has a solution for that? #asknostr )

Own nodes on the other hand can be tricky too, and the costs and stress are underestimated by most people:

- on chain fees for channel opening and closing,

- buying inbound liquidity,

- making backups of your channels,

- potential force closing by whom you had the channel opened with

I myself have not found the perfect solution yet...

Exactly. People say it is easy to self host, but it is certainly a challenge that can turn people off.

and you can lose a lot of money,

apart from general stress of server hygiene, security updates etc
