I had a duck coop with wood chips, worms galore, just pitchforked up soil every day. Ducks would eat them up. Great stuff.
I started wood chips in the garden last fall. This year my garden is kind of anemic. I suspect a nitrogen deficiency. What did you do to counteract wood chips sucking up all the nitrogen the first year?
We used some chemical fertilizer as well as calcium.
We also heavily foliar fertilized with a liquid organic fish, kelp, blood meal blend. Ours too wasn't great the first year.
It got better last year and this year seems to be improving as well.
This is a long term process.
Yes! I forgot about calcium. I asked a question about my strawberries on another note and somebody said they looked calcium deficient.
I had a winter cover crop that included peas to fix some nitrogen and I let my chickens kill the cover crop in March. I thought that between peas fixing nitrogen and chickens pooping in the garden for a couple weeks that would give me enough nitrogen, but I guess I was wrong.
I’ve got some eggshell soaking in vinegar I’m going to add as a calcium supplement. I think I’ll add some blood meal for nitrogen and iron boost. Thanks for the reply and the help.
