WTF?! I just followed a new account on Nostr, using Primal web interface, and this resulted in me un-following all the other accounts I had been following. How did this happen? I had such a great follow list, and now it's all gone.
Discussion
If you're on ios use Damus, primal is kind of finicky, only Primal stuff relays to primal mostly.
i thought the whole point was to be able to use whatever client you wanted. i'm on desktop & android.
Yes, I use multiple clients since half of the stuff isn't ever relayed, Primal is notorious though.
Because stuff I see on most clients is pretty similar but primal will show me completely new notifications that I don't see on any other client.
I've used Amethyst, Snort, noStrudel, and Damus, etc.
Primal is always a problem child since it seems like it is its own ecosystem.
why would my "following" list disappear though, because I followed a new account?
My best guess is a glitch, or relays.
I honestly couldn't say why personally, it's better to ask nostr pros like nostr:nprofile1qqsr7acdvhf6we9fch94qwhpy0nza36e3tgrtkpku25ppuu80f69kfqpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qg4waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t09uq3wamnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwdehhxarj9e3xzmny9uvn2sfc, who might know more.
The short and non technical answer is that contact lists kind of suck.
A client broke your contact list because it received an old or outdated event from relays and updated this old or outdated or even blank list. This can happen for a number of reasons. i.e. A relay that responded first could have had an old version. Maybe you changed relays recently and the relay that responded didn't have any contacts. Maybe the one that responded first is normally slow or offline and had an old version. Maybe the client only uses certain relays.
You can most likely restore via metadata.nostr.com or using a service such as Primal premium.
Primal nuked my follow list a bunch of times and it turned out to be some kind of overflow bug. I kept having to restore it using Nostur. I couldn't use Primal for weeks until the bug was fixed.
because a follow list on nostr is a single event with all the pubkeys in it. primal didnt see your previous event for some reason or bug, and then proceeded to publish a blank one with just one entry for a new follow.
you can likely ressurect the list.. by finding it on a relay where primal has not overwritten yet.
Just found this listed on the Nostr website, hopefully it helps.

WTF, that's really bad. Unfortunately this kind of stuff seems to happen if people use #Nostr as intended with different interfaces etc. But why?

Primal always crashes when I try to follow someone. Works fine on amethyst.
Hey BitcoinEkasi, we're aware of certain users getting their contact lists nuked when attempting to follow a user using our Web app. We're working on this, but in the meantime, as a premium user you have access to our contact list recovery tool. Simply access the contact list recovery section within the premium section and recover your latest contact list.
I always keep my profiles signed into Nostur for iOS. It has a way to recover your missing contacts and itβs free.
ok, great!
