Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a new paid subscription service for Facebook and Instagram on Sunday, granting users a hallowed blue check for a monthly fee.

Meta Verified will cost $11.99 a month on web and $14.99 a month on iOS. It's launching in Australia and New Zealand this week ahead of a wider rollout.

The subscription "lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support," Zuckerberg said.

FR. I deleted like six years ago, but it’s too bad FB, Meta is like this. Lots of people have massive sunk costs. I was tangentially part of an online education company that trained people in digital arts that used some FB service for its class discussions, and it was a really high quality experience. When FB decided to up the cost, the school bailed to discord, but discord is terrible for that kind of thing.

Nostr can replace them over the long term.

I deleted FB years ago. Still have a IG gathering dust to like my wife’s posts here and there. It sucks because it’s a photo album essentially.

My FB was suspended a couple of years ago for no reason. I barely ever even commented on public posts. I managed to get it back a month later. Never any reason given. Anyway, it got me to create print books of all my favorite photos from there like photo albums. I barely use it now.
