...follow up. I just checked to see if I could see my existing private messages in amethyst that were here in primal. I didn't see them at first. Then I updated to use the same relays in the amethyst client, and boom..they showed up. So that makes me believe that yes you can get the messages in another client. But then if you go from client to client, you need to ensure you're using the same relay to ensure you can read them in both clients. Does that make sense? Lol
