The bitter coating on batteries isn’t fully conductive and can cause issues , I recommend to clean it off with rubbing alcohol. I’ve seen this cause problems many times.
Last weekend, my car told me that my keyfob battery needed to be replaced. I had replacement batteries that were some crappy brand that didn't work, so I just changed keyfobs. The next day, my car told me that THAT keyfob's battery ALSO needed to be replaced.
