Kinda. My love affair with sports (mostly MLB) ended with the lockout in 1994. If that didn't make it obvious that the fans are just cows to be milked, nothing will. After being away from sports for 30 years, I see that it's even worse than I thought back then.

The pause is like a moment of realization what the addiction was doing. Similar moments are when strikes happen in other areas. Remember the writer's strike? Shows were terrible or not being made, causing an exodus of watchers.
