Does he have a lightning address?
No, I have my own lightning wallet in phoenix, but I’m not sure how I’d set up a second wallet for him.
I set up a Blixt wallet for my wife because it's self custodial and has a lightning address. I haven't used it enough to recomend it yet, but it looks viable so far.
It's also still too technical for an 8 year old to set up on his own.

Just looking at my lighting usage this year:
I have purchased a pound of coffee, a stuffed animal, lunch for a friend in South Africa, a round of beers in Poland & Nashville, and a used computer. I sold seeds last year for sats, rare plants this. There are a handful of plebs living on a Bitcoin standard that are way beyond my means of sophistication but I only save in the stuff and replace what I spend.
Send him Sats--you just used it.
Then have him send you Sats--he just used it.
Problem solved.

I pay my sons allowance in sats on lightning. That has him interested - and he sees his savings are increasing

I have several kids, and I'd like to set each of them up with their own lightning wallet so that I can pay their allowance in Sats. None of them have their own smartphone. Are there any desktop or phone apps that support multiple wallets? What are my options?
