Expanding the garden this year with two new 100 square ft beds. I like 25x4 beds for a lot of reasons. I will plant potatoes in both beds. That is my usual sequence, first year potatoes, build soil, second year peas or beans, build soil, so on and so forth. The first time I build a bed it’s quite the chore with my rocky soil I try to double dig but usually it’s the pick axe all the way. I can usually fill up 6 or 7 wheel barrels with rocks per bed. After that it’s no till except for in rows that I want to plant carrots, I have to sift out the rocks if I want decent carrots.

Totally understand; we’re with you in similar situation. 👍🏻

You must love digging. 😂 would renting a strong tiller go through those rocks? It is looking good, this hard work should pay off for many years

I think I may try building new beds with potatoes and other root crops. Good idea

I’m glutton for punishment. No really, I tried, the tiller broke 😂. A back hoe for the tractor would work. But I also don’t like mixing all the layers. I scrape off the first few inches and sift, set that aside then dig up the rocks, loosen the soil to about 16 inches. Add the sifted top soil back on top.
