Checking in for flights is dumb. Just issue a boarding pass automatically. I paid for the ticket so assume I'll be there. You'll know if I've changed my mind because, in that case, I won't board the plane.

I think that airlines bother everyone with stupid check-ins to estimate how many seats they can offer last minute or to reduce the food/staff allocated. Those are fine goals but consider, instead, offering an incentive for no-shows to relinquish their ticket and leave the rest of us out of it.

I think they have flight manifests that they have to maintain records of.

But agree the whole process of flying is stupid. Like why do people stand in line at the gate as if they’re desperate to get on the plane - you’ve got an allocated seat, no-one is going to take your spot.

Don’t get me started on the scanners..

Frustration at the sheer dependence of your position and the need to feel you’re doing SOMETHING, making some kind of progress.

So fiat mindset? Because you don’t control the gate, you don’t control the boarding calls, and you’re doing nothing actually productive.

I guess, feels like a reach though. It’s basically a symptom of shitty UX design. Also it’s inside an effective monopoly (don’t like this airport’s design and loading practices? Just use the one down the street next time!) propped up by crony capitalism (government restricts who can build airports, and subsidises them)

If they offered a small refund, everyone who didn't wish to travel would've cancelled their tickets & they could achieve the same objective
