Anyone can create a badge and award it to one or more people. When you get a badge award you have the option as a user to show it in your profile. There is a list of badges that you "approve" and want to wear, so to speak. This avoids your profile showing badges you don't want. Most clients simply take this list and display the badges you have chosen to "wear" (hence the wear/remove terminology I use on the site). You can add and remove badges you've been awarded to this list anytime. Hope it helps!

thanks so much for taking the time to explain 🙏 am i understanding that as a user i can create badges and award them to others (and myself?), and choose which awarded badges to show and hide on my profile.

could the usecase be something like that or is there a better way to achieve this in nostr / definitely not the way badges should be used: as a client i create “category badges” and let users choose theirs within the client closed list so they can then filter nostr content and get found more easily according to the selected badges.

That's correct!

For the second use case you mention I think tags like #grownostr are a better idea, you can include them in your profile so people know what you talk about.

thanks again for a swift and precise answer 🙏 the challenge i see is that hashtags are open, there’s a LOT of them. how can a client curate then, and are closed lists a possible thing to achieve in nostr? the opportunity i see with badges is they can achieve that (client gives closed list of category badges to users > users select categories to show on profile). very non-tech and very new to nostr, maybe i see it all wrong!
