I think the problem is much more complicated than people realize. We have what Shakespeare wrote in the same language 400+ years ago and most of the meaning has been lost. There are a few scholors who have figured out that the plays (being written for everyday people) are actually packed full of puns & that they really are hilarious comedies with the background drama for contrast.
Now multiply the timeframe by 5 or so & throw some dead languages in the mix... And instead of reading the bones of modern literary devices like "it was as if a fire was lit within them" to descibe the passion that the events imbued in people, they think magical fire decended from the heavens to identify the disciples, or something like that. I suspect the reality is that the events actually required no magic to be earth shattering & life changing when people who believed they lived under a just republic saw their govt torture & kill a man for the "crime" of helping people on the wrong day.
