I appreciate the notion but you as the dev shouldn’t control the experience of all your users, that’s similar to locking them down and they will just look for a different client. For example I am using Damus on iOS currently and have auto translations off, purely because translations aren’t always accurate and sometimes they translate phrases that were already in English, I like tapping a note and pressing translate manually, but having the button there. I assume there will be other users like me, if you don’t like the idea of opt in then you should at least have it opt out with a prompt when the first translated text shows up for example, but you shouldn’t just think “this is how I would like it so this is how I will do it”. No negativity by the way just my 2 sats, you’re the dev and it’s ur app after all :) thanks for all the work you do sir🫡
But there are ways to opt out. I don't know what makes you assume there isn't. You can disable them directly on the translated message. Or, like I said, use the fdroid version which doesn't even have the translation dependency baked in.
Just as you give the translation option on Twitter you can give the option to change to the desired language, it is your choice.
The default translation is very simple but reduces a very noticeable friction.
